Greetings and welcome to the homemade website of London caricaturist "Mr Sketchum" - I'm the man in a sharp suit at the party with a clipboard and pen ~ but not the one organising the queue for taxis!

I entertain, amuse, astonish and delight guests by sketching lightning-fast eye-popping cartoon portraits at all kinds of occasions, all over the UK. I've been a full-time freelance caricaturist for hire at events since 1999(BC). I'm lucky in that what I do is fun and gives people lasting memories.

"Hi Alfie ~ Me and Al can't thank you enough! You are brilliant and your sketches are Hilare! Every single guest loved your work and thanks too for squeezing my two little pest sisters in after your finish time! Thanks again so much ~ Tanya and Alan :-)" (9/11/14)

Pens and paper are my only "props" really, so I arrive primed for action. Readily adapting to surroundings, I can "mix'n'mingle" over drinks, circulate table-to-table during dinners, or find a good spot where individuals, couples and groups can come to be sketched.

I present the sketches to guests absolutely free - as you can imagine, sketching portraits of people you've never met before is hard enough without having to get the shirts off their backs as well (!).

"Give her a body like Baywatch - and a face like Crimewatch!!"

Anonymous (bellowed at me by a fellow in the crowd at a Warburtons Bakery staff event)

A classic "pub joke"...! In reality though, my job is to please and not to punish. I'm very mindful (and prudent!), so usually depict the ladies pleasingly. It tends to be the gentlemen, especially the rambunctious ones, who can come out, let's just say...naturally amusing.

"Hi Alfie, just a quick email to say many thanks for attending our boat party last night – you were a great hit with the crowd - and you didn't get thrown into the Thames after all!"

Katie Hollis-Wood, Totum (19/9/14)

Blurring the line between farce and realism, my sketches go from full-on laugh-out-loud caricatures, to mischievous parodies (some might say travesties), to quite delicate lifelike "thumbnail sketches" where the emphasis is more on appeal than humour. At most events I'll use a combination of all three lines of action, tailoring my approach according to how each subject and situation presents itself.

"Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!"

Johnny Ball (legend and genial mathematical eccentric), Grosvenor House Park Lane

I map faces out and get a good likeness in no time, capturing and emphasising those unique fleeting quirky expressions and characteristic attitudes we know each other so well for. With key traits as their focus, and containing the "audacity of simplicity", the likenesses in my sketches can be quite striking.

"Dear Alfie, I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for last night for all your hard work!! Everybody had a great time. Thank you. Kind Regards, Louis"

Louis Ling, Unite Students (14/9/14)

~ The three types of event which I attend the most : ~

"What you see through your glasses isn't reality dude."
Anonymous (written in my sketchbook whilst I was away)

Setting tongues wagging as they are shown around, which in turn sets an upbeat tone for your gathering, my sketches make for great "party tricks".

They're often genuinely funny, and can have guests in hysterics - a great way to break down barriers and bring everyone together. Those previously strangers playfully swap comments on the drawings, and those already acquainted either delight in mercilessly ribbing one another over how peculiar they look, or coo at the appeal in the sketch. It's all good to bring about such bonhomie.

There's enough to my sketches to stimulate some thought, and perhaps prompt informal conversation around the lofty subject of Art with a grandiose capital 'A'. In any event though, guests are instinctively glad a creative is present and working away.

"Everyone loved your "works of art". We were really impressed with the likenesses, and a few of them made the rounds to howls of laughter.

Hilarious!"

Geoff, Brighton (18/7/14)

My sketches capture sides to you that even the best wedding photographs, despite sometimes being quite beautiful, simply can’t.

Animating any lulls that can occur between key points such as during the photographs, the welcome line-up, between courses, and when the speeches have ended, I can raise smiles and provide personalised wedding favours at any time during the reception ~

After the ceremony (of course! :/) I mix'n'mingle during drinks, then circulate table-to-table amid the wedding breakfast. I can also sketch away at the evening reception, when I can locate & draw giggly guests as well as those mellowing out.

Whether they're all-out lavish extravaganzas or more intimate celebrations, I bring big smiles to big days.

"Mr Sketchum performed at our wedding reception. His drawings, along with his sense of humour, went down a storm! He was a fantastic addition to our reception and we're very happy that we booked him. He got along with everyone so well that some of our guests thought that he was a friend of ours!"
~ Sue and John, Chelmsford

Corporate events aren't stuffy! Corporate guests ~ delegates and the like ~ have as good a sense of humour as you or I, and I can promise you, know how to enjoy themselves.

My own persona is self-possessed, neat and personable, with a flair for funny - perfect for relaxed business-focussed gatherings - meaning happy clients and new contacts for you.

I represent light relief, but can also become an "effective marketing device" by helping companies create memorable events which simultaneously entertain, reflect well on their organisation, and generate awareness of what they have to offer.

"Hey Alfie, thanks for completing the colour caricature – it looks brilliant and Shital is thrilled with it too! Thanks again, Jess"
Jessica Chant, PepsiCo (1/10/14)

"Thanks so much for your work last evening. So much great feedback! And, I haven’t laughed so much in ages!! Was lovely meeting you and hopefully we’ll see you at a future event."

Paula Storey, International Property, Torus (6/6/13)

~ The Science Bit: ~

I draw the sketches on heavy (200gsm) A4 paper, and present them in clear flush side & top opening  folders. I can work smaller - A6 (postcard size) or A5, as well as big, bold & beautiful in my preferred size: A3, twice that of A4.

I also provide an optional service of pre-printing - subject to proof - your brand logo/graphics and/or a personal inscription on each sheet of paper I use ~ ideal for leaving a lasting impression ~ to underline the ethos of a campaign, mark an occasion, or simply to add that personal touch.

"The whole evening was lifted by your drawings, and looking at the photos we had a real giggle. Thanks for making the event go with a bang!"

Michèle, Argos HQ, Milton Keynes

"Oh! How sweet! And you got my best side!"

Andrew Logan (sketched from behind), jewellery sale at his home

Moonlighting from studying at Chelsea College of Art, my first performance was at a really hectic charity Bachelor & Spinster Ball. Bamboozled by the brouhaha and having to struggle to concentrate in the midst of such a cacophonous mêlée, I valiantly managed to come up with decent sketches, and soon enough, (*ahem*) my personality shone through. In 1999 I went full-time as a freelance sketch artist; since then I've been commissioned to sketch at well over two thousand events.

I'm no stranger to county-to-county trekking. Armed with a Thermos™, a railcard, pens & paper and a necessary sense of humour, I'm always traipsing to & back from events the length & breadth of Old Blighty. "It's a tough job ~ but somebody's got to do it!"

"Find a job you love and you'll never have to work again."

Confucius (551-479 BC)

"Alfie, massive thank you again for yesterday, you are fantastic!!! Everybody loved you!! Charlotte xx (27/7/14)
